We (Regina and Genadi) has two times traveled to the lake Baikal in Siberia. Here you can find some hints for an ecological tourism planning based on their experiences.

Where you can find more information and inspiration for this theme?

First you want to be inspired. You want to see impressions, photos, information about this beautiful, but still mysterious place. You want to see more, you want to know more. The best way is to visit some Russian web pages containing often rich photo archives an deals sometimes with representations in English language. Here you will find a list:

  1. northern Baikal: This page represents the northern Baikal region with his center Severobaikalsk, a town grown with the BAM railway, the northern sister of the Transsib. This page contains a lot of information about the region, touristik highlights, transport, accommodation, photos and much more.

  2. The Great Baikal Trail is an NGO, what aims is to establish the ecological tourism at the Baikal and to build a hiking trail around the Baikal similar to the Great Appalachian Trail in the US. This organization can be a good partner on site and for visa requests.view into the Ayaya Bay

  3. Some amazing photo impressions you can find on the sites www.magicbaikal.ru and www.baikal.ru. A very large photo collection you can find at www.nature.baikal.ru

  4. Last but not least a german project of Baikalplan association in Dresden has an informative web site www.baikalinfo.com. This association gives support for own initiated ecological tourism with local partners.

Be aware, we do not give recommendations for western travel agencies. Our hints are addressed to peoples, which want to organize a private eco touristy trip to the Lake Baikal using offers on site. Especially we want to support the northern region of Baikal and our friends in Severobaikalsk.

You are determined to plan this seriously? What you have to do for safeguarding visa, transportation and accommodation?

We recommend to apply following check list:

  1. (-7/-6month) Come in contact with local partners in the Baikal region and verify a tour program. schedule it less then 30 day including the travel time because of limited tourist visa duration.

  2. (-6/-4month) Get an official invitation for visa request in Russian embassy.

  3. download from internet a visa application form (e.g. pdf German,English,US-Citizen) and obtain a travel health insurance (declaration sheet in German). Make sure your passport is valid for the planned travel date. For more information follow the links to the Russian embassies. Your complete list of necessary documents:

    • official invitation

    • valid passport

    • visa application form

    • travel health insurance (for UK not necessary)

  4. (-4/-3month) Send or bring all documents to the Russian embassy or consulate responsible for your home region.
If you won't waste time and nerves for this procedure, you can order a service for an extra payment in several specialized travel agencies therefore.

  5. (-3/-1month) Order Tickets for Flight ore Train.

Tour planning variant what we do recommend:
